DEFINITION

DEFINITION

This is the French version of House, also called "filter house" for its almost systematic use of filters and phaser effects. It is sometimes confused with Nu Disco for its many references to disco.

French House was very influenced by the "space disco", which still means "French Touch". It was a mixture of "Euro disco" and original Deep House. Techno and Electro House are also great sources of inspiration.

STRUCTURE GENERALE

GENERAL STRUCTURE

This genre does is not recognized by any particular rhythmic structure but by its sounds and its very specific construction:

- the extensive use of filters to create suspense is one of the main features of the French Touch,

- the bass lines are generally powerful, long and ripping, eerily similar to riffs* of hard rock, which is why many continue to call this genre "Electro-Rock",

- the build ups are almost never looped* in the accelerated manner of most EDM genres. It will be either a filter getting increasingly important before disappearing on the drop*, or a complete lack of effects to announce the drop like in traditionnal House.

PROVENANCE

ORIGIN

Lexpression French Touch vient dun blouson cr par Eric Morand pour "F Communications" et portant linscription : We Give A French Touch To House.

The term French Touch is a jacket designed by Eric Morand for "F Communications" and bearing the inscription: "We Give A French Touch To House."

When in 1988 Margaret decides Thatchet prohibit "rally around repetitive music", the rave went into exile in France. Laurent Garnier is one of the first to mix the House and Techno Paris. The inspirations of the pioneers of the genre then found not only in the House and Techno but also in the disco, funk, soul, and jazz.

If from 1994 artists like Air produce very inspired Trip-hop sounds, it is with the album "Boulevard" St. Germain acid-jazz sound in 1995, "Pansoul" Motorbass (Etienne de Crecy & Philippe Zdar) and especially "Homework" of Daft Punk (Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo) in 1996 that the French House takes off and explodes in the charts, including England. It is the freshness and originality of its productions that out from the crowd.

In 1998, "Music Sound Better With You" by Stardust (notament group consisting of Thomas Bangalter) was a huge commercial success.

There is talk of "French Touch 2.0" to designate the new French label artists such as Ed Banger, Kitsun, Citizen Record, Bromance ...

SOUS-GENRES

SUBGENRES

French House and Nu Disco are often confused and misused as a designated single genre. These types are similar, yes, but the French Touch 2.0 for example moves away increasingly

There are therefore three production streams in the French House.

- Filter House. Characterized by the omnipresence and omnipotence of its filters, making him take a stressful and oiliness

- French Funk section of the French particularly close to the Disco House but distinguished, despite are looking very syncopated (funky), its still low and diffuse rappers

- French Touch 2.0: Modern momentum of the French Touch (see source), extending his inspirations to Minimal Techno and urban genres such as rap and hip-hop. So we distinguish these two currents:
i) A stream of inspiration Techno, one of the precursors remains Laurent Garnier in terms of the contribution of the Techno in France, but will be called for Gesaffelstein 2.0 wave of French-inspired Techno House. This is indeed a sub-genre fusion of beat four-to-the-floor House and construction of song (or rather a deconstruction) like the Techno .
ii) A urban, inspiration closer to hip-hop, which can sometimes even contain rap lyrics. Can be mentioned Busy P and Brodinski behind this current very popular on the French underground scene.
